I’ve always had skew teeth and I have wanted straight teeth since I was a child. But due to finances back then, my single mother could not afford it. Fast forward to today and braces are still expensive. And how does one decide between what type of braces to choose or should you do braces or aligners? Thankfully, adult braces are no longer something to be embarrassed about and are quite common-place nowadays, even in the corporate space.

Everyone wants beautiful straight teeth that can flash a million Rand smile but deciding how to go about getting one is enough to cause a toothache. Most South Africans have plenty of options between braces or aligners, but sometimes having too much choice isn’t a good thing.

Dr Sheryl Smithies, a top Cape Town based aesthetic dental surgeon and facial aesthetic practitioner, explains that most patients get to pick their preference based on what best suits their lifestyle. The revered dental genius shares some important information that people should consider before making that all important final decision.

Rubicon’s Latest Collection at SA Fashion Week

21 April 2023 saw the House of Rubicon bring to life an authentic celebration of heritage with the showcasing of their latest collection at South Africa Fashion Week.

Commemorating twenty-one years as a style and culture institution in South Africa’s fashion landscape, Rubicon’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection marries the eastern and western influences with African elegance, while paying homage to the reimagined Myth of Origin story about the lost kingdom of Mapungubwe.

Founder and Creative Director, Hangwani Nengovhela draws inspiration from the landscapes and artifacts recovered at the world heritage site. The kingdom’s origins, passed through oral history, tell a tale of three brothers journeying through the region. One brother was inspired to stop and sleep over while the other two traveled on. He awoke the next morning to the breathtaking sight of Mapungubwe’s landscape with it’s beautiful salt pans. This brother went on to establish the kingdom that would later be known as both an economic and cultural trading hub inviting travelers from throughout the continent as well as overseas, including Europe and Asia to make the journey to trade in gold, pottery, beading, and other items that were highly coveted in the great iron age.

This past week, I had the privilege of attending a media trip for the launch of National Geographic’s 4 part series called “Secrets of the Elephants.” We were hosted by the team from Disney+ and National Geographic at the Ivory Tree Game Lodge in the Pilanesberg in the North West Province, South Africa. More about this incredible trip will follow in later posts, including the game drives we experienced, where we saw magnificent, close up elephant sightings.

For now, here’s what you need to know about the broadcast of this truly amazing series.

With today being Earth Day, it was apt for National Geographic to premiere the next instalment of the award-winning Secrets Of natural history franchise. On Saturday 22 April 2023, the four-part “Secrets Of The Elephants” premiered on Disney+ as well as across Africa on National Geographic Wild (DStv 182, StarSat 221).
