John Vlismas has poked fun at most of the dark horses in our collective mental stable. He has touched racism on its studio, wrapped his tongue around the human brain, and even goosed God as they passed each other in the passage. 2018 was a tough year for John Vlismas, as he lost one of his favourite human beings on Earth. Loss is a theme most of us don’t see as one to write a new hour of comedy about – but John isn’t most of us.
“The End” is by far his most personal, raw, dark and deeply funny show. He will take you into the psychology of death, illustrate the lengths we will go to, to pretend it won’t happen and finally take you to the site of his beloved Dad’s last breath. You may think John Vlismas is a mad man, but he proves in this show that he is determined to go right into the darkness of the human condition and find humour deep inside – where nothing is supposed to be funny.
“I’ve always said that the best comedy is horror’s neighbour. Safe comedy is offensive to me – like alcohol free beer. The ultimate horror is our own death, mostly because we have grandiose ideas of self as a species. If there is a heaven, why are funerals possibly sad? Because deep down, we all know that it’s The End.”
Tickets are available from the Box Office at Montecasino and Computicket.
range from R130 – R180.
The show runs from 24th April – 02nd June 2019, Wednesday – Saturday at 20h00, Saturday Matinee at 16:00 and Sunday Matinee at 15:00.

Everyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE Marc Lottering’s brand of comedy. You can read about his previous shows that I have written about here and here. From the time he was an up-and-coming young comedian, when I lived in Cape Town back in the day, we have supported his shows, and he never fails to deliver in tickling one’s funny bones! If you are also a loyal fan, you will know that Marc started out doing shows with various characters, and Aunty Merle from Belgravia Road in Athlone (which is just up the road from where I actually grew up, on the Cape Flats) was one such delightuful and colourful character.
Nik Rabinowitz has been announced as the new comedy star addition to the The Big 5 Comedy Show at the Teatro in Montecasino on 27 and 28July 2018, among four other titans of South African stand-up at the The Big 5 Comedy Show, supported by Comedy Central.
Rabinowitz joins John Vlismas,Joey Rasdien, Stuart Taylor and Jason Goliath for two wild shows.
The legendary DJ Ready D completes the line up with him performing between changeovers.
Marc Lottering has always been one of my all time favourtite comedians. He hits the nail on the head with each performance I have ever attended, and I’ve always made sure that, come hell or high water, I make it to his shows when he is in town. So I was “over the moon” to hear that Lottering at the Lyric will take place on Sunday, the 8th of July at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City at 3pm.
I was one of a select few media, who was invited to a preview of Comedian Robby Collins‘ one man show called “Son of Carol” a few days ago. In case you didn’t know, the Goliath and Goliath Comedy Club now also has an additional venue in Braamfontein, in Johannesburg, downstairs at the Bannister Hotel, and this was the venue for the showcase.
In medieval times, a jester was employed by a nobleman or monarch to entertain him and his guests. The heavyweights of South African comedy are by no means jesters, but they certainly do entertain… Catch the Kings & Queens of Comedy at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday, 21 July for a show of hysterical proportions.
Shining their comical armour and sharpening their witty swords for the night, the stellar line-up of comedy giants includes Joey Rasdien (MC), Khanyisa Bunu, Krijay Govender, Mark Banks, Mpho Popps, Muthu Murugan, Ndumiso Lindi, Rob van Vuuren, Tracey-Lee Oliver, Trevor Gumbi and Tumi Morake.
From the producer of Shrek The Musical and twelve sold-out award winning pantomimes, KickstArt Productions bring you Puss in Boots, a swashbuckling spectacular for the whole family. Live at The Lyric Theatre from Friday, 30 June until Sunday, 23 July 2017, this rendition of Puss in Boots is a variation of the original tale.
I’m a fan of cruise liners – I won a Mediterranean cruise in 1997 and also done the Durban – Portuguese Islands in Mozambique – Durban route, about 5 years ago. Cruising is an all-in-one combo – you get the food, drinks, accommodation, entertainment and fun in the sun and sand! And with Oh Ship! the cherry on top is that you get 72 hours of some of South Africa’s top DJs and comedians, to keep you entertained, while you sip on our sangria.
The elastic-faced king of clean comedy, Barry Hilton, will be taking to the spectacular Silverstar Centre’s stage with his freshest, ultra-funny and slick production, Evolver.
On stage for two nights only, 28 and 29 October 2016, Evolver will see the vibrant Hilton showcasing new material, reaffirming exactly why South Africans consider him to be one of our country’s most relevant comedians.
Hilton’s genuinely funny bones, his uncanny ability to gauge a crowd, and his firm stance on keeping comedy “clean” for the last 30 years, makes Evolver a must-see show for die-hard comedy fans and those who simply want to be left breathless with laughter alike.
At only R150 a ticket, Silverstar Casino has ensured that fans have no reason to miss out on Evolver, a show best described as a dynamic and versatile masterpiece.

It seems like Lip Sync Battle (LSB) has taken the world by storm. Already in season 2 in the USA, the entertaining show entails two celebrities “battling” it out for the LSB champ belt, by miming to well known songs. The audience determines the winner by how loudly they cheer. It’s all fun and games on LSB, and very “tongue in cheek” when it comes to the celebrity feuds, as they provoke each other in the rounds of two songs each.
