Beyond Technology: The Unexpected Opportunities I Discovered at the 2026 Singularity Summit South Africa By Guest Writer Siraaj Cassiem

This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the Singularity Summit South Africa at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, representing my wife, Mishkah Roman-Cassiem, and her online publication, Mzansi Life & Style.

Now in its eighth edition in South Africa, the Summit has established itself as an important gathering for people interested in exponential technologies, innovation and the future of business. The 2026 event brought together more than 40 speakers from around the world, attracting business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, technology specialists and innovators who are exploring how emerging technologies will shape the way we live and work.

My initial reason for attending was to explore the exhibition area and discover exciting new technologies that might appeal to the everyday Mzansi Life & Style reader. I was particularly interested in seeing what new innovations were available and finding interesting stories that we could share with our audience.

However, what I discovered was something quite different from what I had expected.

A Summit About More Than Technology

While the Summit showcased developments in artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology and other emerging technologies, much of the conversation focused on a bigger question: how will these advances change the way we work, do business, learn and live?

Three speakers stood out for the ideas they brought to these conversations.

David Roberts, an international expert on disruption, innovation and leadership, challenged delegates to reconsider how they prepare for the future. His central message was that the pace of artificial intelligence and technological change demands more than simply adapting existing strategies. Businesses and individuals need to rethink how they operate and prepare for a world in which change is accelerating.

Professor Benjamin Rosman, a leading South African researcher in artificial intelligence and robotics, explored the evolving relationship between humans and intelligent machines. His field of work raises important questions about how AI systems learn, make decisions and interact with people, particularly as these technologies become increasingly integrated into everyday life.

Raoul Pal, founder of Real Vision and a prominent commentator on financial markets, cryptocurrency and emerging technologies, brought an investment perspective to the discussion. His work examines the intersection of AI, digital assets and the wider global economy, highlighting how technological developments can reshape industries and create new economic opportunities.

Across these discussions, a common theme emerged: understanding new technology is important, but recognising how to apply it meaningfully is where the real opportunities lie.

Two Unexpected Opportunities

As someone with nearly 30 years of experience in the television and film production industry, I have always believed that learning should never stop. Over the years, I have watched technology transform the way we create, produce and share content.

More recently, I have been developing my own training business, helping people draw on their existing knowledge and life experience while learning how to use digital tools and artificial intelligence to create content and explore new income opportunities.

I attended the Summit expecting to discover interesting gadgets, products and innovations that we could feature in Mzansi Life & Style. Instead, I walked away with something potentially far more valuable: two possible collaborations that I intend to explore and incorporate into my training business.

I won’t reveal too much just yet, but both opportunities have the potential to add value to what I am building and, more importantly, to the people I hope to help through my training programmes.

It was a useful reminder that you don’t always find what you’re looking for in the places you expect. Sometimes, the most valuable discoveries come from conversations, connections and being open to possibilities you hadn’t considered before.

Looking Ahead

Attending the Singularity Summit South Africa reinforced my belief that we are living through a period of extraordinary change. Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are creating new possibilities, but taking advantage of them requires curiosity, a willingness to learn and the ability to turn ideas into practical solutions.

For me, the Summit was not simply about discovering the latest technology. It was about identifying opportunities, meeting people who think differently and finding ways to translate what I learn into something useful.

I went there representing Mzansi Life & Style, hoping to find interesting stories for its readers. I left with fresh ideas, valuable connections and two potential collaborations that could help shape the next chapter of my training business.

And perhaps that is one of the most important lessons from attending an event like this: sometimes the greatest value isn’t what you see on the exhibition floor, but what you discover through the people you meet and the possibilities those conversations create.
The future is moving quickly. Rather than simply watching it unfold, I want to be part of helping people understand it, embrace it and use it to create new opportunities for themselves.
