Join 2024’s Move To Slow Food, Slow Living and Homesteading

It’s predicted that in 2024, the cost of living will continue to rise. As a result of this, and as environmental concerns loom large, many people will now seek simpler, more sustainable ways of living. This desire for living with less, being more present in our daily lives, and strengthening our connection with nature has already seen people across the world embrace activities like making jam, starting a herb garden, buying old vinyls, and taking up nostalgic crafts like embroidery and macrame.

Slow cooking posits that food should be grown and bought locally, prepared with care, and consumed with appreciation. Slow living is a mindset whereby a more balanced, meaningful life is curated through slowing things down and appreciating the world around you. While humanity hurtles down the post-pandemic path to its old helter skelter rush, interesting insights from the Google Culture and Trends team show a growing amount of searches for content around slow living. These searches reveal more people looking for content revolving around gardening, baking bread, upcycling furniture, and, quite simply, making a proper cup of coffee.

Alongside these trends is homesteading, a lifestyle whereby you rely on natural resources wherever possible and make environmentally conscious choices for a more self-sustainable life. Born of necessity in different historical eras in various parts of the world, its resurgence has been dubbed “modern homesteading, and is being adopted by those with a desire for a simpler life and living off the land more self-sufficiently. Millennials especially have taken to its tenets, cultivating practices like growing their own food and living lighter on the earth with more natural lifestyles.

Modern homesteading, slow living and slow eating are all set to grow in 2024 as people recognise the value in living intentionally  and lowering their cost of living. If you’re interested, here are some practical aspects you may want to consider.

Eight Mercedes-Benz 300SLs to headline the 2024 George Old Car Show

The biggest gathering of original Mercedes-Benz 300SL sports cars will take place at the 2024 George Old Car Show on the weekend of 10 and 11 February 2024. A total of eight of the nine original series 300SLs residing in South Africa will be at the show, which is now in its 27th rendition in 2024.  These are the cars that earned the 300SL the title of “Sports Car of the Century” in 2009!  “We are thrilled to have committed entries of these magnificent cars, says Waldo Scribante, chairman of the organising club, The Southern Cape Old Car Club, which has established this show as the premier Western Cape event for classic cars, over the past three decades.

“Seven of the 300SLs are Roadster versions, and for the first time, a magnificent original Gullwing 300SL Coupé will be joining the Roadsters at our event.  The Gullwing is presently the only one of these original SL series coupés in South Africa. The sight of this car joining seven roadster versions is going to be awe-inspiring,” says Scribante, who personally owns one of the most comprehensive Mercedes-Benz classic collections in South Africa.  “From the club’s point of view, we are extremely honoured to have eight of these ultra-rare and very valuable Mercedes sports cars attending our show, and it points to the status that the George Old Car Show has in the classic car fraternity, all over the country. “What I find intriguing is that the SL 300s entered for next month’s show hail from many parts of the country. The cars are arriving from as far afield as Johannesburg, Klerksdorp, Cape Town, and Paarl, – while one of them is a local machine owned and garaged here in George. “And even more significant is that our SL display marks, almost to the day, the 70th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL.”

Gwyneth vs Terry: The Ski Crash Trial on TLC South Africa

On the 26th of February 2016, Gwyneth Paltrow and Terry Sanderson collided on the ski slopes of Utah, USA. In the aftermath, Terry Sanderson sued Gwyneth Paltrow for over $300,000 in damages. It was a case of her word against his: who was at fault for the devastating crash? Battling it out in court, it was a celebrity trial that split public opinion. ‘Essentially the only two people in this world who know the truth are Gwyneth Paltrow and Terry Sanderson,’ as Legal Commentator Terri Austin puts it, ‘determining who was the uphill skier and who was the downhill skier is the $300,000 question in this case’.

Now, the sensational trial of Sanderson vs. Paltrow is laid out to bare in the brand-new documentary Gwyneth vs Terry: The Ski Crash Trial (available on TLC South Africa @ 22:00 CAT on Sunday, 21 January). With unique access to key players in the story, including a juror from the trial and key witnesses, this documentary provides the inside story of one of the most talked about legal cases of 2023. Who caused the fateful collision is then hotly contested and leads to an eight-day trial watched by the world, Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow or retired optometrist Terry Sanderson?
