John Vlismas in “The End”

John Vlismas has poked fun at most of the dark horses in our collective mental stable. He has touched racism on its studio, wrapped his tongue around the human brain, and even goosed God as they passed each other in the passage. 2018 was a tough year for John Vlismas, as he lost one of his favourite human beings on Earth. Loss is a theme most of us don’t see as one to write a new hour of comedy about – but John isn’t most of us.

“The End” is by far his most personal, raw, dark and deeply funny show. He will take you into the psychology of death, illustrate the lengths we will go to, to pretend it won’t happen and finally take you to the site of his beloved Dad’s last breath. You may think John Vlismas is a mad man, but he proves in this show that he is determined to go right into the darkness of the human condition and find humour deep inside – where nothing is supposed to be funny.

“I’ve always said that the best comedy is horror’s neighbour. Safe comedy is offensive to me – like alcohol free beer. The ultimate horror is our own death, mostly because we have grandiose ideas of self as a species. If there is a heaven, why are funerals possibly sad? Because deep down, we all know that it’s The End.”

Tickets are available from the Box Office at Montecasino and Computicket.

Tickets range from R130 – R180.

The show runs from 24th April – 02nd June 2019, Wednesday – Saturday at 20h00, Saturday Matinee at 16:00 and Sunday Matinee at 15:00.

Chicago The Musical

A nightclub singer, a double-murderess, a smooth-talking lawyer and a cell block of sin surrounded by the razzle dazzle of the world’s sexiest musical soon returns to the stage in Cape Town and Johannesburg! You’ve got it comin’ as the story of the award-winning Broadway and West End musical CHICAGO unfolds to show-stopping songs including ‘All that Jazz’, ‘Cell Block Tango’ and ‘Mister Cellophane’.

The multi-talented all-South African touring cast, band and crew began rehearsals in Johannesburg in August 2018  ahead of an international year-long tour that began in New Zealand.  First stop was Auckland, followed by Wellington where audiences were dazzled and critics raved. “Corruption, greed and murder comes to the capital courtesy of world class CHICAGO” says StuffNZ while Diversions summed up the show: “A killer chorus, exceptional choreography, razzle, dazzle and all that jazz”  are just two of many glowing reviews.  In October the show moved to China, opening at the Grand Theatre in Chongqing. Three more engagements followed in October before opening in Beijing in November; Guangzhou in December and Shanghai in December 2018 and January 2019.

Aunty Merle The Musical is coming to Johannesburg

Everyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE Marc Lottering’s brand of comedy. You can read about his previous shows that I have written about here and here. From the time he was an up-and-coming young comedian, when I lived in Cape Town back in the day, we have supported his shows, and he never fails to deliver in tickling one’s funny bones! If you are also a loyal fan, you will know that Marc started out doing shows with various characters, and Aunty Merle from Belgravia Road in Athlone (which is just up the road from where I actually grew up, on the Cape Flats) was one such delightuful and colourful character.

Terrific Thailand – Part 1: Patong

Start of Bangla Road – reknown party street in Patong, Phuket

Sawadee Ka everyone! That’s hello in Thai.

Let me start off this post by saying that this is NOT a sponsored post at all. I saved, hustled, waited, done my research and eventually we travelled to Thailand earlier this year. I have divided this post into 3 parts as we had the privilege of visiting 3 locations in Thailand. I researched quite a bit and eventually got a terrific deal via Holiday Factory. It was about R12 000 (ZAR) each for the Etihad return flights to Thailand, including all private car transfers and water transfers, accommodation for 10 nights including breakfast, and we stayed in Patong, Phi Phi Islands and Krabi. I paid for the booking in March 2018 and we flew in September 2018.

I am mentioning the costs because:

a) It was a really good deal

b) People always ask me how much it all cost

c) Sharing is caring 🙂

d) Once you do some research online, one can still find good travel packages, in this case it was via Holidayfactory.co.za
