I was recently invited to review a performance at Beefcakes in Illovo, Johannesburg. Now for those who may not know what Beefcakes is all about, it is a dinner and drag queen show, with loads of fun, dancing and singing all “mishmashed” together. The venue is also very popular for Bachelorette / Hens Night Parties, and when I say popular, I mean that there were not 1, 2 or 3 Hens Night Parties, but a whopping 9 of them, on the night that I attended.
Mzansi Life and Style Meets … Natalie Manko Bernariusz, Owner of Naturally Young Interiors
This is the first post in my series called “Mzansi Life & Style Meets …”
As the name indicates, this series is about people I have met via friends, acquaintances, social media, traditional media and people that I have met on my journey of life thus far. These people are making big things happen, one step at a time, achieving their dreams and making it a reality. They are inspirational and aspirational, and in each blog post in this series, we learn more about what makes them tick.
Today we meet Natalie Manko Bernariusz, owner of Naturally Young Interiors.
Soweto Camp Festival
This year’s Soweto Camp Festival is just about a month away. The event has grown in quality and entertainment since its inception in 2010. It’s hosted at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers this Easter weekend (3 to 6 April 2015) and it’s a fun setting of music, fashion, hip hop and Soweto heritage. The festival is a vehicle for young local entrepreneurs to expose their businesses to a large, vibrant market and has a lot of whole new fun activities including three stages, so campers will be spoiled for choice in terms of music – eg. dance hall, hip hop and house music.
Habitat for Humanity And The Desmond Tutu International Build Week
A few years ago, when I was the Assistant Producer for Spirit Sundae (SBAC1), we featured the wonderful work done by Habitat for Humanity.
Founded in 1996, Habitat for Humanity South Africa is the national organisation of Habitat for Humanity International and part of Habitat’s Europe, Middle East and African region. Habitat South Africa is entirely self-funded and works in partnership with all stakeholders to serve the poor and marginalised in our country. Based on the firm belief that decent shelter provides the greatest opportunity for families to break the cycle of poverty, Habitat works with all people to give a hand up in building homes, communities and hope.
Free Uber with VW UP! and Celebrity Drivers
I recently had my first Uber experience… and it was effortless. I downloaded the Uber app a while back, but only used the service on Valentine’s Day, when I attended a Glamour magazine event (more about this in a later post).
It really is as easy as pie, just select which Uber car service you’d like – either Uber Van (for larger groups of people), Uber Black (if you want a stylish ride in say, a Mercedes Benz) and Uber X (a ride in say, a Toyota Corolla). Select your pick up location, get a fare estimate (if you’d like) and then click on “Request UberX”. You will be notified on the app when your car will collect you via the nifty estimated time of arrival info, which is usually within 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how many cars are in your vicinity. When you sign up for the app, you also load your debit or credit card details, so at the end of your journey, your card automatically gets debited, so no cash changes hands, making it safer than a usual metered taxi. Our driver was friendly and polite and I rated him 5 stars at the end of the journey.
