Avengers: Endgame (Not a Review)

I saw Avengers: Endgame yesterday, like the rest of the planet. Am I a comic book fan? No. But I had such severe FOMO that I was compelled to go see it.

I had to watch its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War to quickly catch up with the story line. That done, hubby and I popped off to the IMAX in CradleStone Mall – because how else are you going to watch Avengers Endgame if not on a gigantic screen with surround sound, hey? He is the one who watches more comic book movies and TV series, but I wound up answering his questions about “Who is that character again?”

I am not going to risk “life and limb” by doing an actual review of the movie because … did you see that Facebook story about the guy in Hong Kong who was beaten up because he shouted out spoilers to a line of waiting patrons who were about to see the movie. Instead, here are some interesting facts and figures about the box office takings thus far in South, East and West Africa, for Avengers Endgame.

Inanda Polo International – South Africa vs. Argentina

For the past few years, I have had the privilege of attending various polo events. I can highly recommend the sport for a day of relaxation, horsing about and fun! If you don’t know the rules of the game, eager spectators will gladly explain it to you and sometimes you get a pamphlet explaining it. Either way, the “sport of kings” needs to be experienced at least once or twice!

The Inanda Club recently announced the Inanda Polo International SA vs Argentina match, to be played on Saturday, 11 May 2019, marking the peak of the South African polo season, headlined by Aon South Africa.

This event is a highlight on the sport and entertainment calendar and spectators can look forward to a match that promises to reignite the age-old rivalry between the best of South Africa and Argentine polo. The game set against the spectacular backdrop of Jozi’s business hub, Sandton will be played at intense high speed, requiring peak athletic conditioning of both horse and rider.

Polo, the oldest of Equestrian Sports, a game of Central Asian origin, was first played in Persia (Iran) at dates given from the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD.

Polo, or “The Sport of Kings,” as it is often referred to, is frequently thought of as something that extremely wealthy people do for fun. And it is, but it also has a fascinating history, especially in an Argentine context.

Chicago The Musical

A nightclub singer, a double-murderess, a smooth-talking lawyer and a cell block of sin surrounded by the razzle dazzle of the world’s sexiest musical soon returns to the stage in Cape Town and Johannesburg! You’ve got it comin’ as the story of the award-winning Broadway and West End musical CHICAGO unfolds to show-stopping songs including ‘All that Jazz’, ‘Cell Block Tango’ and ‘Mister Cellophane’.

The multi-talented all-South African touring cast, band and crew began rehearsals in Johannesburg in August 2018  ahead of an international year-long tour that began in New Zealand.  First stop was Auckland, followed by Wellington where audiences were dazzled and critics raved. “Corruption, greed and murder comes to the capital courtesy of world class CHICAGO” says StuffNZ while Diversions summed up the show: “A killer chorus, exceptional choreography, razzle, dazzle and all that jazz”  are just two of many glowing reviews.  In October the show moved to China, opening at the Grand Theatre in Chongqing. Three more engagements followed in October before opening in Beijing in November; Guangzhou in December and Shanghai in December 2018 and January 2019.

Aunty Merle The Musical is coming to Johannesburg

Everyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE Marc Lottering’s brand of comedy. You can read about his previous shows that I have written about here and here. From the time he was an up-and-coming young comedian, when I lived in Cape Town back in the day, we have supported his shows, and he never fails to deliver in tickling one’s funny bones! If you are also a loyal fan, you will know that Marc started out doing shows with various characters, and Aunty Merle from Belgravia Road in Athlone (which is just up the road from where I actually grew up, on the Cape Flats) was one such delightuful and colourful character.
