Shaka iLembe: A South African Epic Series with 17 SAFTA Nominations

Shaka iLembe – the South African series produced by Bomb Productions for M-Net’s channel Mzansi Magic – has swept the board with 17 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) nominations, including Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Achievement in Direction and Script Writing.

This sweeping epic tells the story of the young Shaka growing up, and his struggles to claim the throne. It is also about the powerful woman who contributed to his journey, including his mother Queen Nandi. It was the best-ever performance for a MultiChoice drama series in its history when Season 1 aired in June 2023, attracting over 7.5 million DSTV viewers in South Africa.

It also reached number one on the DStv App across Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and other African countries and had the unique honour of being South Africa’s most Googled TV show in 2023, with over 10 billion impressions on social media.

Lufthansa Launches New Nonstop Johannesburg-Munich Route

After a 19-year hiatus, Lufthansa has proudly announced the launch of its new nonstop long-haul service between Johannesburg and Munich (Germany). It marks a significant addition to Lufthansa’s network with 34% more seats offered from Johannesburg and coincides with South Africa’s celebration of Tourism Month.


Onboard the inaugural flight was Lufthansa’s CEO, Jens Ritter, who symbolically
cut the ribbon in Johannesburg to commemorate this exciting new route. “Munich,
with its award-winning airport, is a popular and beautiful city in the heart of
Europe. It is also a convenient hub to take advantage of numerous onwards flights.
Our customers in South Africa will have more choice and travel options departing
from Johannesburg, as this new connection complements our daily service to
Frankfurt. Both routes are priced at the same level, providing passengers with
flexibility to even combine both routes,” said Mr. Ritter.


The new service will operate year-round from Johannesburg, with flights
scheduled every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday morning. Passengers will travel on
the modern and fuel-efficient Airbus A350-900, which accommodates up to
293 passengers across Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class.
With the flight departing Johannesburg at 8:20 AM, travellers now have an
alternative travel time to Europe. It touches down at Munich airport at 6:50 PM, in
10 ½ hours, making it one of the shortest flight times to Western Europe. This
service expands Lufthansa’s footprint in South Africa. Together with Cape Town,
Lufthansa Group carriers Lufthansa, SWISS and Edelweiss now offer a total of
34 weekly connections to Europe from South Africa in the upcoming winter
schedule.

A line-up of 40 Designers, coupled with an exciting schedule of associated, fashion-related events, are on the cards for the Autumn/Winter 2025 South African Fashion Week Collections taking place at its new home at Melrose Arch from 24 – 28 September 2024.
 
“We are delighted to have luminaries like Mantsho, Erre, House of Olé, Naked Ape, 2017 Scouting Menswear Competition winner, Floyd Avenue, and Artho Eksteen, winner of the 2020 New Talent returning to the schedule. We are equally thrilled to welcome Melrose Arch to our circle of partners who understand how to leverage and align their brands optimally with the soft power of fashion,” says director Lucilla Booyzen. 
 
“SA Fashion Week remains the pinnacle of the country’s fashion design talent. Together with our existing sponsors, Cruz Vodka, Mr. Price, Isuzu, L’Oreal, and E!
