I first saw Russell Brand playing the role of rocker ‘Aldous Snow’ in the Judd Apatow-produced box office hit comedy ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ a few years ago.

Here’s a clip to jog your memory:

Since then, Russell Brand, has starred in several films including ‘Rock Of Ages’, ‘Arthur’, ‘Hop’, ‘Get Him To The Greek’, Bedtime Stories’, ‘The Tempest’, ‘Paradise’ and the voice of ‘Dr. Nefario’ in the hugely successful ‘Despicable Me’ series.

But did you know that he is an acclaimed stand up comedian and author, with an acerbic wit and intellect? Beginning his career as a stand-up comedian, Brand rose to fame in 2003 for his appearances on MTV and on “Big Brother” spin-off, “Big Brother’s Big Mouth.” His career really took off with his first nationwide standup tour, ‘Shame’ in 2006, which was released on DVD as ‘Russell Brand: Live’. Brand launched his second nationwide tour in 2007, ‘Russell Brand: Only Joking’ released on DVD as ‘Russell Brand: Doin’ Life’ and in 2009 he brought his stand-up comedy tour to the United States with ‘Russell Brand: Scandalous’.

Bonang Matheba

When E! Entertainment Television first launched a few years ago on DSTV, I was over the moon with excitement! Being an avid pop culture curator, this is my go to channel for all things celebrity, so when E! announced that they will be launching their first ever locally produced series, called E! News Special, this was music to my ears!

The 12-part original series will profile some of Africa’s most inspiring and influential pop culture personalities including singers, actors, models, socialites and sport stars. The series will premiere on E! (DStv Channel 124) in South Africa on Thursday, 10th September at 8 pm.

Addictive reading indeed.

Smoking hot goodie bags add bling to XXI South African Music Awards

XX1

About 4 years ago, I attended the South African Music Awards (SAMAS) and saw first hand the massive and highly sought after goodie “bag” that the artists received. I use the term “bag” loosely as they actually received a suitcase of items. A major cell network was the sponsor that year, and the artists received a big yellow suitcase to put all the high end goodies into.

Well, this year’s SAMAs take place on Sunday, 19 April 2015, and the event has come of age, as this year it celebrates its “21st (XX1) birthday.”

Free Uber with VW UP! and Celebrity Drivers

VW up

I recently had my first Uber experience… and it was effortless. I downloaded the Uber app a while back, but only used the service on Valentine’s Day, when I attended a Glamour magazine event (more about this in a later post).

It really is as easy as pie, just select which Uber car service you’d like – either Uber Van (for larger groups of people), Uber Black (if you want a stylish ride in say, a Mercedes Benz) and Uber X (a ride in say, a Toyota Corolla). Select your pick up location, get a fare estimate (if you’d like) and then click on “Request UberX”. You will be notified on the app when your car will collect you via the nifty estimated time of arrival info, which is usually within 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how many cars are in your vicinity. When you sign up for the app, you also load your debit or credit card details, so at the end of your journey, your card automatically gets debited, so no cash changes hands, making it safer than a usual metered taxi. Our driver was friendly and polite and I rated him 5 stars at the end of the journey.
