South Africa’s Zulu Version of “Superstore” Announced

I was a super fan of the NBC series called “Superstore” which is a US comedy about the work and private lives of the staff at a fictional bulk buy store called Cloud 9. As a former TV Producer and Commercials Production Manager, I always said that a local version of this show would make for a good comedy series and now that is actually a reality!

NBCUniversal Formats and African streamer Showmax have announced a new format agreement, which will bring a South African Zulu-language adaptation of NBCUniversal’s hit US comedy Superstore.

Superstore marks the second comedy format adaptation from Showmax, who have also licensed The Office from the BBC.

Superstore is licensed globally by NBCUniversal Formats, a division of Universal International Studios, which is part of Universal Studio Group. This will be the second non-English version of Superstore, following Supertitlán, the Latin adaptation of the format in Mexico.

I am a huge fan of E! Entertainment Television, so I was ecstatic to hear that they are about to launch a local presenter search.

The six-part competition series, set to launch in 2017, will follow eight local contestants as they compete for the honour of being named the first-ever host for E! in South Africa.

The locally produced series called “The Search: E! Host South Africa” is expected to launch on DStv channel 124 in February 2017, and will follow eight aspiring presenters as they compete to become the first-ever host for the channel in South Africa, and next member of the E! family.

E! Entertainment Television continues to invest into original programming and with The Search: E! Host South Africa about to begin production, we are delighted to be showcasing local talent” says Colin McLeod, Managing Director, UK and Emerging Markets, NBC Universal International Networks. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for up-and-coming talent from across the country to pursue this unique opportunity to become a pop culture ambassador on E! in Africa.”

This new reality competition will follow the contestants as they live together in a luxurious mansion, showcasing their talent in a series of weekly challenges. Each week, one of the contestants will be eliminated by a panel of judges until only the most accomplished and tenacious contender – whose finger is firmly on the pulse of pop culture – is declared the winner. The winner will see their star-studded dreams come true, as they become the first-ever E! Host South Africa, covering future events on behalf of the channel.

Nice work if you can get it, methinks.
