10 Things I’ve learned after a decade in Johannesburg

ImageMy husband (Siraaj Cassiem) and I arrived in Jozi (Johannesburg) in 2003, so 2013 marked a decade in the City of Gold. I am originally from Cape Town, and whenever I heard of Johannesburg, I always had this vision of doom and gloom and inner city squalor, as this was mostly what was seen on television.

So it was with a tad of trepidation that I agreed to join my husband in Jozi when he was transferred there in 2003, when he worked for eTV. Apparently, some of the biggest forms of stress involve moving house, moving to a new city and changing jobs – and I was doing all 3 in one step with this move.

Fortunately, my brother-in-law lived in Pretoria at the time, so he was able to take us around to view possible places to rent, which we had done a month before Siraaj moved to Johannesburg. We found a lovely cottage to rent in Jan Smuts Avenue in Parktown North, which was very central.

The big day came on 2 September 2003. Siraaj had moved up a month before me, as I needed to work out my notice period at work. I put my car on the train the day before and flew up to Egoli.

Launch of New Lays Deli Kettle Cooked Chips

ImageLast week, I attended the official launch of Lays Deli kettle cooked chips at Urban Tree in Sandton. Now, I’ve always been a fan of Lays, preferring it to other brands of chips. And when I saw this new kettle fried version, in a variety of flavours, in the grocery store a few weeks ago, I was filled with ambrosial delight.

So, when I was invited to attend the launch of the new Lays Deli kettle cooked chips, I was pleasantly surprised and excited. A pretty basket arrived, filled with an array of the new Lays flavours, together with a Soy Lites scented candle and a variety of oils.

Now and again one should take some time to spoil oneself. It can be as simple as having a manicure and pedicure or lavish like treating yourself to a spa day at the Saxon Hotel. Gourmet food and fine wine meets fashion and show jumping with the inaugural public event taking place on Saturday the 9th of November 2013 in the relaxed country chic setting of Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West. The innovative new fair kicks off with a VIP Gala Dinner on Friday evening, 8th of November, also available to the public, featuring Bertus Basson, PJ Vadas and some of South Africa’s most sought after wines.

Remember remember the 1st of Movember

I recently attended the launch of this year’s Movember. Now for those of you who may not know, Movember is held each year in November, and is a moustache growing charity initiative, which enjoys over 1.2 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world. Participants grow moustaches to generate awareness by getting men to talk about their health issues.

Movember is a global campaign in 21 countries and its vision is to “Change The Face of Men’s Health.” Last year saw more than 30 000 South Africans sign up and together raise more than R6.4million for local men’s health programmes. Globally, the campaign raised more than R1 billion last year.
